New lines for the 2018 season includeCan-CanPurple,
a rose-to-purple shadesmixture, its large semi-double
flowers having ruffle-edgedpetals. Plants are robust,
and thepreferredpot size is 1.0litre. IceCreamSundae
majors on its cream/ pink bicolouration. This, says Vale
Royal’sDaveWales, is best for flowering in the January-
February period, in a 10.5cmpot. For sales in the same
months, RoseBuddies is a new small-flowered rosebud
type series. There are nine colours,many of themwhite-
flecked.
Continental breeding
Primrose andpolyanthus varieties bredbyRudyRaes
inBelgium have awell established following amongUK
growers. There is a large annual trial in the company’s
glasshouses near Lochristi, and trials every other year
in this country. PhilipOglesby, the company’sUK agent,
reports that the 2019 trial will be at BurstonNurseries in
St. Albans, as in 2017 and 2015. Planning is alreadywell
under way. Visitors to this season’s trials inBelgiumwere
able to see three new colours that are shortly tobe added
to the recently introduced first early seriesPrimus. There
are three new colours also for the compact early-flowering
Evie series, and two for themid-seasonAmbie.
Charlie is a newmid-season series, introduced toUK
growers at BurstonNurseries inFebruary last year.
Compact but large-framed, it is particularly suitable for
10.0 – 10.5cmpot production. Currently available as a
mix, therewill be up to seven separate colours in the near
future. And for growers looking for a late series, there are
now nine colours inCabaret, twoof themnew.
RudyRaes is proudof Rubens, its double-flowered
series raised from seed. DoubleCream is new, the sixth
separate colour. Not all the goodprimrose genetics
emerge from thework of German, British andBelgian
breeders. In theNetherlands, HemGenetics has awell
established series inPioneer. Accord, its other primrose
series, is a synthetic hybrid formassmarket production,
good for packs aswell as smaller pots.More recently,
AlaskaAppleblossom, a new
colour for its series.
HuskyRaspberryPunch, a new
colour for its series.
