BallColegrave Trials
BallColegrave’s trial of primroses andpolyanthus is an
annual event which customers arewelcome to visit by
appointment throughout the lengthy floweringperiod. The
company’s bedrock offer is the series bredbyGerman
primrose specialist EbbingLohaus.
On theBallColegrave trial benches therewere several
impressive introductions in the ‘one-off’ or ‘special’
category. Cherish andPassion, semi-doubleswith
fringedpetal margins, strike a very feminine note. Other
introductions included the shadesmixtureAmore and
ScentsationRhubarb&Custard, a sister variety for the
recently introducedRaspberryRipple. All thesewere seen
in 13.0cmpots.
In the early floweringBonelli series a newCreamwas on
show, scheduled for 2018 release. Bonelli is claimed tobe
the earliest series on themarket andPeterMitchell, seeds
manager for BallColegrave, toldme that demand for
primroses inNovember andDecember has grown. There
is of course competition for Bonelli fromSakata’sDanessa
– also claimed, likeBonelli, tobe the earliest series! For
the samemarketingperiodother series includeSalome
fromFlorensis, Primus fromRudyRaes andPrimera
fromSyngenta.
Fruelo andAlaska are theEbbing Lohausmid-season
staples, both seen in their full and verywide colour ranges
at theBallColegrave trial. Just as in the established series
from rival breeders –Danova fromSakata andOrion from
Syngenta, Tobie fromRudyRaes andCairo fromFlorensis,
development is anongoingprocess. Improvements are
introduced annually to upgradeperformance – and to
keeppacewith the competition.
BallColegrave’s late season seriesHusky is primarily
for theMarchmarket, and is popular with independent
garden centres. Demand frombigmultiples likeB&Q
usually trails off sharply after earlyMarch, though, says
PeterMitchell.
Newprimrose series are fairly infrequent arrivals. For this
Cupid, anew shadesmixture.
