Timed for IPM in late January, Fleuroselect announced
the four varieties awarded aGoldMedal for the year
2018. The choice of the four wasmade as a result of very
extensive trials during 2016, involvingmost of the twenty
Fleuroselect trial sites. These are located in tenEuropean
countries, withone in theUSA. Twoof the trial sites
areBritish, one at Floranova inNorfolk and the other at
SuttonsSeeds inDevon.
PetuniaMyLoveOrange, from the Italianbreeding
company Farmen, is seed-raised, and is the firstmale
sterilepetuniawith awide temperature tolerance.With
scented, single flowers, it is freely-branching and compact
at the retail stage, without need for pinchingof PGR’s.
ZinniaProfusionRed, bredbySakata, is a new colour for
its already highly regarded series. It is the first true red
zinnia of its type on themarket. ProfusionRedhas also
been trialled in theUSA, and as a result is alsoone of the
winners of theprestigiousAll AmericaSelections awards
for 2017.
TheProfusion series is characterizedby very free
productionof flowers about 6cm indiameter, tolerance to
PowderyMildew, no need for deadheading, and abushy
habit inplants 40-50cm tall.
Lewisia cotyledonEliseRubyRed, bredby theDutch
company Floragran, joins EliseWhite as a true-to-type
seed-raised variety. EliseMixed is also available andwas
itself a Fleuroselect GoldMedal winner in 2013. Thedwarf
plants produce flowers continuously throughout summer
from a sowing4 to5months previously. Ahardy perennial,
it thrives in containers andon rock garden, aswell as
PenstemonPentasticCollection.
