Nunhems also showedNUN09196, a large truss-type
tomato that produces 130-150g fruits, whichwill appeal
more toGerman andSouthEuropeanmarkets.
On themarket for a couple of years, Hi Power is claimed
as the number two cucumber in lit crops. At HortiContact,
Nunhemswas showingNUN79002, which is for standard
spring crops. Described as a fast-growing varietywith
intermediatemildew tolerance, other traits include a good
quality and a smooth skin. Currently in trialswith some 25
Dutchgrowers, the varietywill be named at the endof this
year. That tomatoes are abig crop in theNetherlands is
backedupby recent estimates that the crop accounts for
around 1,850ha of the total Dutchglass area.
Competition is fierce in amarket where traditional large
truss types (25%of Dutchgrower’swork in thismarket
segment) andgood tasting speciality varieties continue
to takemoremarket sharewith everything inbetween
decreasing.
Seedbreeders are all looking togain the edge. TakeDe
Ruiter, for example, which last year launched its exclusive
Delishious brand.
At HortiContact, the companywas keen to talk about the
twonewnicheproducts in this. The first is calledDelisher,
a cherry plum type. GrownbyRedStar, and the result of
a long and intensebreedingprocess, the variety’s sweet
taste, texture and looks are attracting attention.
Strabena, the secondmember of theDelishious brand,
gets its name from the crown and ribs, which resemble
those of a strawberry.We understand there are no
immediateplans to addmore varieties to theDelishious
brand.
RijkZwaanwas not only talking about its current
selectionof standard andmini cucumbers, but also about
newAsian types for theEuropeanmarket. Still at the
number stage (72-103RZ), and in a few large-scale trials,
characteristics of one of the new varieties ondisplay at
HortiContact include a highDM and a herby taste, which
Delisher is one of twonew tomato varieties included inDe
Ruiter’sDelishious brand.
