Palmweevil factsheet updated
Defra has updated its plant pest factsheet on redpalmweevil, a devastatingpest
of palms including ornamental species, for which theUK is currently seeking
protected zone status.
It was found on importedpalms in France last year and inEssex last October,
inside a round-leaf fountain palm that hadbeen imported from theNetherlands.
“These findings suggest that, despite emergencymeasures, the pest ismoving in
the trade,” saidDefra.
The larvae are legless, creamywhitewith a brown head capsule and grow up to
5cmwhile the reddish-brown adultswith the long ‘nose’, or rostrum,
characteristic of weevils can reach about 3.5cm. Pupation takes place in a 4cm
long cocoonmade of fibrous strands. All stages can be confined to inside the
host plant.
