are four newcomers to their

runner, with 19of them, but
themidi-floweredTianis series
has almost asmany, twoof
them new colours for this
year, Rose andDeepRose.
MassMarket
The breeders, triallers and
growers of mini-flowered
cyclamen forty years ago
would not only have been
impressedby the speed of
production of modern
varieties. An even greater
impressionwould have been
made by the arrival of
cyclamen as amassmarket
product for outdoor use by
consumers inNorthern
Europe. The development of
series now includes the new
Smartiz FantasiaMagenta
andSmartiz FantasiaPurple.
These are the smallest-
flowered varietieswith the
distinctive Fantasia bicolour
characteristic. As in all
Fantasia varieties, petals are
narrower and thicker than
standard, making themmore

Cyclamen persicum, the
species fromwhich all our
pot-grown cyclamen are
derived. Outsider petals are
quite narrow and slightly
pointed. Flower production on
the plant is de-centralized.
While varietieswithmore or
less standard flower form
have visual impact, Outsider
varieties have grace.
Toprove its success here, in
September theOutsider
series received amerit award
in the 2016 Japan Flower
Trials. This joins the spate of
awardswon byGoblet,
Varinova’s 2013 introduction.
This also is a product for the
outdoormarket, with
bicoloured flowers of
distinctive chalice shape.
Originally introduced as a
one-off, it is now available in
three colours.
The longer established
MelodyOutdoors series is
now available in 13 colours, of
which four areShine varieties.
These are bicolours
characterizedby thewhite
tips andmargins of the upper
part of the petals.
