Favourites 2018
The chance for consumers to name their favourite variety
has always been a feature of theMeadowCroft Festival.
To encouragemaximum response, a free entry in aprize
draw had inprevious years been the inducement for
visitors to vote. In2018 everyonewon – therewas a
voucher for a free hot drink inApril, in exchange
for every completedballot form.Michael Smith
reported the largest number of votes for years! The
poll winner was ViolaXwilliamsianaBunny Ears,
a stand-alone variety fromThompson&Morgan.
This has true novelty on its side, as themost
different variety of the 500-plus in the Festival. The
elongated upper petals are the inspiration for the
name. In last year’s Festival it came in at number
four in the Favourites list. The enduringpopularity
of the JumpUp colour combination – thepair of
uppermost petals of a contrasting (usually darker)

three, had serious novelty in terms of petal markings.
Its sister variety Tiger EyeYellow, also fromFloranova,
was theNo 1 variety in2017, and featured in the TopTen
during three of theprevious four years aswell.
