TheSussex-basedgrower of lettuce and herbs
became convinced about thebenefits of growingwith
LEDgrow lights after trialingPhillipsGreenPower
LEDToplights and visiting several growers in
TheNetherlands andFinland. 1onathanZwinkels
atMadesteinUK said: ¸We are seeing a strong
demand for UKgrown lettuce and herbs, sowe’ve
been exploringways to raise our productivity.We
were impressedwithwhat we saw inour trials and
confirmed those viewswith visits togrowers inThe
Netherlands andFinlandwho are using LEDs to
grow lettuce. Our aim is to use LEDgrow lights to
improvequality, reduce the impact of adverseweather
conditions, and improve the shelf life of our products.¹
The LEDswill be installedbyPhilips Lighting’sHorti
LEDpartner, CambridgeHOK. ¸It’s great to see how
our network of growers are ambassadors across the

able to show how LEDs canhelp them speed up their
crop cycles andgrowmore compact plants. That’s the

in1982 andhas introducedmany innovations to the
UKmarket, including curly leaf lettuce in the late
1980s and livingmixed lettuce in2001. They currently
focus onproducingglasshouse lettuce andgrowing
freshbasil all year. In addition to conventional growing
methods,MadesteinUK employs sustainable growing
methods such as anDeepFlowhydroponic system
whichmakes efficient use of water andminimiaes the
chances of groundwater contamination. The company
has been investigatingLEDgrow lights for a long
period and carriedout several LED trials at its site in
Chichester from 2014 to 2017.
