TheDutch unquestionably lead among foreign suppliers
toGermany of horticultural equipment and technology,
andof both youngplants and finished retail-ready
material,. Therewere sixty companies on theDutch
national exhibitionbooth, and theywere only amodest
part of the story. Around three hundredmore exhibited
elsewhere at IPM.
MNP Åowers is among thebest knownof theDutch
exhibitors. On its stand its introductionSenettiWhite,
a new colour in itswell knownPericallis hybrid series,
was a focal point. It waswinner of thebedding and
balcony plants category in the IPM InnovationShowcase
competition. Thiswas not all: three new colourswere on
show in its recently introduced hybrid argyranthemum
seriesGrandaisy. ThesewereGold, RubyRed and
TourmalinePink.
Hishtil was one of eight exhibitors from Israel. The
company enjoys a risingprofile in theUK, partly because
of its presence annually at the Four OaksShow, where it
is hostedbyBotanics International. Hishtil products on
its stand and in the limelight include its ‘tree’ format basil,
peppers and calibrachoa.
Syngenta is among thebest known suppliers of young
plants toUKgrowers. On its standAlexRhodes reported
abusy show, especially on the secondday. A stand
highlight was the interspecificpelargonium seriesCalliope.
Therewill be amajor promotional push in theUK this
Indiaka,meaning share the joy, beingplayedby visitors to IPM
next to theMorel stand. This to celebrate the launchofMorel’s
new cyclamenby the same name, seen in thebackground.

Therewere 23British exhibitors at IPM this year,many
of them supportedby theCommercial Horticultural
Association CHA . Among themwere TWHamilton
Design andHotbox International, bothof them equipment
manufacturerswith a long standing track record in export
sales. Alongwithother companies from theUK, they fully
shared the ‘outstandingly positivemood’ reportedby the
CEOofMesseEssen the company owning the exhibition
complex . Pat Flynn, trade associationmanager for CHA,
reported abusy showwith exhibitors on theAssociation’s
Britishpavilionmeeting visitors frommany countries, the
Ukraine among them. Brexit-relatedproblems appeared
not tobe on theirminds, and for export prospects,
the sharp fall in the value of theBritishpoundpost-
referendum couldonly be helpful.
IPM next year
The 37th IPM at Essenwill be held from 22nd to 25th
1anuary 2019. 95%of this year’s exhibitors intend to
returnnext year. And 92%of a large random sample of
visitors said that theywanted to come again in2019.
AlthoughEssen is a large city population almost 600,000
withmany hotel beds, there is always severepressure
accommodation in late 1anuary, causedby the huge
annual inÅux of IPM visitors. If you intend tobe one of
them in2019, booking far in advance is advisable, and is
likely to save adeal ofmoney. The showwebsite has links
tobooking services.Making a oneday visit from theUK is
possible, but generally unwise – the show is enormous

sseldorf Airport. During IPM shuttle coaches to and
from the exhibition halls run at 30-minute intervals. Rail
connections are also excellent, enabling access to hotel
locations all over the city and to the surrounding area.
