SYNGENTADUTCH TRIALS
THE
VEGETABLE
FARMER •
JANUARY 2017
Growers have been asking for
a red Crispita baby leaf lettuce
since Syngenta launched the
green variety Crispita II, and at
this year’s field event the
company was showing its first
red variety. Suitable for
harvesting throughout the
season from the spring to
autumn, LS16037 not only
produces a good and robust leaf
structure, but like Crispita II also
comes with a full mildew
resistant package.
Other attributes include a small
cut point, and the variety
produces a deep red and glossy
colour throughout the leaf. “We
have already looked at it in UK
breeder trials,” says Syngenta
salad crop specialist George
Hallam. “More trial seedwill be
available next seasonwhen the
variety will be named.”
LS16743 is claimed as the
darkest green Batavia to date
from Syngenta. Darker still than
Parole, whichwas previously the
company’s darkest variety,
LS16743 comes with a full
resistance package to Nasanovia
and lettucemosaic virus. Suitable
for the use from the spring to
autumn, the newcomer is
stronger than Parole against
yellow discoloration on the leaf
tips.
Syngenta was also showing a
new red BelagioMultileaf
(LS15450). Achieving a better
headweight than Claragio,
which is already in the UK,
LS15450 comes with a full
resistance package. Other
notable points include amore
Batavia appearance than
Claragio, and the newcomer
produces burgundy red leaves
(Claragio cherry red). LS15450
will be named at the end of this
year andwill be available
commercially from 2017.
With around a dozen
commercial varieties, sweetcorn
is already a big crop for
Syngenta in the US, and inmany
European countries, including
Hungary and France. The focus
with breedingwork is not only
to look for a good tip fill and a
soft skin, but also develop
sweeter varieties. GSS3951,
which is available for large-scale
UK trials next year, is described
as ‘super sweet’ variety, which
offers good tip fill and field
standing performance.
On the savoy cabbage front,
Utah (SGS156) is a new early
Nebraska type with good
resistance to head diseases.
Cordesa (SGS0243), for the
summer freshmarket, is claimed
as the first club root resistant
Savoy, whileManitoba (SG0025),
a very late and dark savoy that
matures after Kamchatka, is the
latest variety in the Syngenta
range.
On the white cabbage front,
technical seeds specialist Nigel
Kingston reckons commercial
varieties Zenon, Storidor, Kilaton
and Kilazol continue to perform
well. “We are also excited by
SGW0423, which has good
uniformity and is suitable for
long-term storage,” he says.
Pink cabbage/red cabbage
Pinkstar is still marketed via
Naylor Farms in the UK, andMr
Kingston says the non-bleeding
is resulting in a lot of interest. So
too is Pinktoria (SGX0019), a
new storage type, which is also
available through Naylor Farms.
He is also keen to draw attention
to squash. “We have the
strongest genetics available with
main varieties Cronos, Syros and
Milos. and new variety Patmos is
definitely worth trying,” he says.
