BransforddirectorsGeoffCaesar andAdrianMarskell were
there to receive theSilver Award in the category for finished
plants and trees. In the judges’ opinion, their companywas
surpassed only by the giant GZMUrbanHorticulture company
fromChina.
Innovation Showcase
The new varieties’ competition has been a feature of IPM for
ten years. This year therewere 61 entries from 35breeders,
and six plant categories inwhich an award ismade. January in
northern Europe is a challenging time andplace for breeders
seeking to present their introductions at their best, but in 2017
the judgeswere able to forget this fact in the herbaceous
perennials category. The IPM Innovation awardwent to a
seasonally appropriate entry, the Ice ‘nRoses variety trio-
white, red and rose - in theHelleborusGoldCollection. The
breeder was theHeuger Company. Its location inGlandorf, in
NWGermany, is celebrated in the botanical name for these
Christmas Rose hybrids, Helleborus x glandorfii.
The one other seasonally appropriate awardwinner was
LittleSanta, a compact variety of the classicChristmas tree
species, Picea abies. It has been put forward as the ideal
variety for consumerswhowish to have two trees, not just
