On theSakata stand the new celosiaDragon’s Breathwas
shown, a variety that should add usefully to the range of taller
plants for bedding and containers.Westhoff had calibrachoa
Blueberry Scone, a Four Oaks 2016 awardwinner, and
Vitroflora its award-winningmonarda variety, BeeHappy.
Therewas vigorous promotion of marketing concepts, too.
On the Florensis stand the keywordwasMixMasters. Growers
have the option of ordering plugs inwhich two or three
cuttings of compatible varieties have been rooted together,
or of choosing the Florensis assortment of mixed colour plant
recipes. MixMasters has its own 36 page brochure, published
last November.
DummenOrange had a thoughtful display of varieties to
promote the theme ‘Colour your shade’. Fuchsias such as
Aretes ArroyoGrande, begonias andNewGuinea impatiens
featured.
Poinsettias,
hellebores and others
The timing of IPM is unhelpful for most kinds of flowering plant
but a prominent exception is the poinsettia. All the better
known European companies that breed this plant featured it

very prominently on their stands.
Syngenta are proud of Titan, not a new variety, but an
outstanding performer in recent shelf life trials, and specified
to its suppliers by a significant UK retailer. For Beekenkamp
the spotlight is on a trio of recent introductions, Astro, Leona
andHera. SelectaOne offers awide range of varieties, most
notably itsChristmas Feelings family, compact in habit and
now in eight colours.
Poinsettiaswere not the only plants that werewell served by
the January timing of IPM. So of course, were hellebores.
Breeding specialistsHeuger, offering a verywide variety range,
made the biggest splash for this flower. Theywere not alone
by anymeans. HilverdaKooij featured their recent introduction
SnowCrystal. And themarket has a place also for seed-raised
varieties: Syngentawas showing its free-floweringChristmas
Carol, and on theSchneider standHappy Dayswas featured
prominently.
Cyclamen enjoy a far longer marketing season than hellebores,
with January among the stronger months for sales as house
plants. SpecialistsMorel and Varinovawere there at IPM. On
theSyngenta stand the newmini-cyclamen series SeeWhy
featured – a sell-out success, says the company’s Steve
Volmary’snewprimroseNautilusBlueVein.
